Background

True North recently moved into new offices in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, an area that’s the creative and cultural heart of the city. For those who’ve never ventured ‘up North’, it’s a vibrant neighbourhood filled with independent cafes, bars, restaurants, music venues, art shops, and street art.

Our new home, 24 Lever Street is a former hardware and furniture warehouse; six floors of beautiful Victorian architecture, now resident to some of Manchester’s finest designers, illustrators, digital gurus and writers

Problem

In keeping with tradition, the newest tenant is asked to design the building’s Christmas card. A card that represents the personality of the building and its unique creative community.

Aiming to impress our landlord and collaborate with our new neighbours at 24 Lever Street, we set about raising a little festive cheer for the people of Manchester and a few quid for a local charity.

Solution

Designed with community in mind, we turned one side of 24 Lever Street into Manchester’s largest-ever advent calendar. Collaborating with artists from across the city, including Stanley Chow, Young and Sheila Bird, we showcased their work with new illustrations being revealed daily behind each window.

Results

Each illustration was then made into a limited-edition print and sold online.

Over £1500 was raised from the sale of the prints and donated to Wood Street Mission; a Manchester-based charity that helps children and families living in poverty, particularly at difficult times like Christmas.
