2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and the first international match between England and Scotland in 1871.
Royal Mail commissioned us to create a set of stamps and collectibles celebrating iconic moments in key Home Nations Rugby Union matches over the past six decades.
Iconic moments
The set of eight special stamps features iconic moments in the history of the men and women’s Home Nations rugby.
One of the critical challenges to the project was to bring a connection to each of the images spanning different eras and plays within the game.
Retouching the backgrounds to black and white and casting a spotlight on the players in full colour, enabled us to create continuity between each image, and bring a sense of drama and dynamism.
This feature enabled the players in red, green, blue and white to stand out clearly, emphasising the equal balance of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales games being played.
